Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj Takes Part in the Work of the North Atlantic Council in ISAF Format at the Ministerial Level in Brussels

At the invitation of NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj participated in the work of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) in ISAF format at the ministerial level on December 4th, 2009 in Brussels.

In his address, Minister Alkalaj stated that BiH is carefully following developments in Afghanistan and assessed that the unified efforts of international organizations involved in Afghanistan and the Afghan government will be of crucial importance in the coming period. With regard to BiH’s involvement in these efforts, Minister Alkalaj stressed that BiH contributes actively to creating a secure environment in Afghanistan through the participation of BiH Armed Forces members in ISAF.

He mentioned that BiH is the current Chairman-in-Office of the Adriatic Charter and that possible forms of cooperation between its Member States in building regional capacities and extending support to ISAF have been proposed within the framework of the Charter.

Minister Alkalaj stated that BiH places great importance on further enhancing security and stability in the world and that, in that sense, it remains committed to upholding international principles and values. Guided by this notion and based on what has been achieved as part of its cooperation with NATO, BiH has submitted its application for NATO MAP status. Minister Alkalaj stressed BiH’s firm commitment to maintaining its active and constructive role within the framework of cooperation with NATO and expressed the hope that our country, with support and a favorable outcome at the ministerial meeting, will continue its progress towards full-fledged membership in the Alliance, adding that this would serve as yet another proof of NATO’s support for Bosnia and Herzegovina and further necessary reforms.

Minister Alkalaj concluded his address by stating that BiH will continue its activities aimed at contributing to the further stabilization of circumstances in Afghanistan.
