Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the American-Adriatic Charter, Signed Joint Statement in Sarajevo
Ministers of Foreign Affairs of member states of the American-Adriatic Charter – Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj, Republic of Croatia Gordan Jandroković, Republic of Albania Ilir Mete, Republic of Macedonia Antonio Milošoski, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Montenegro Vesko Garčević and US Ambassador Charles English – on 15th December 2009 in Sarajevo discussed about regional co-operation in NATO MAP process, contribution to ISAF mission, and other activities of the American-Adriatic Charter. Bosnia and Herzegovina was presiding over American-Adriatic Charter in the second term of the year 2009. At this meeting, Mr. Zoran Vujic – Assistant Minister of Foreign Affaris of Republic of Serbia, was present as a monitor.
Joint Statement was adopted, which emphasized furthering of dialogue at supporting the countries of Western Balkans in their pursuit to Euro-Atlantic integration.
Member states congratulated Montenegro for receiving the invitation to join the Membership Action Plan (MAP). Also, participants affirmed strong support for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s aspiration to MAP and its eventual NATO membership. The substantial progress made with the Alliance by Bosnia and Herzegovina was welcomed, and additional encouragement was expressed for B&H persistence on its path of reform towards MAP.
Strong support for Macedonia’s membership into NATO in the nearest future was reiterated, acknowledging the fact that Macedonia’s full integration into the Alliance will contribute to greater peace and stability in the region as a whole.
“We welcome in particular President Obama's announcement that the United States will provide substantial additional troops and resources as well as the contributions announced recently by Member States of the Charter contributing to ISAF”.
In the Statement, member states strongly support the Letter of Intent of the Defense Ministers of Adriatic Charter Member States, plus Serbia and Slovenia, on enhancing regional cooperation through the establishment of three regional centers, as well as the initiative for the exchange of civil servants between AC Member States, with the aim of sharing practices and enhancing concrete knowledge and experiences on Euro-Atlantic integration process.
Republic of Croatia will take over Presidency over American-Adriatic Charter as of January 1, 2010.
